"1) everything that’s already in the world when you’re born is just normal;

2) anything that gets invented between then and before you turn thirty is incredibly exciting and creative and with any luck you can make a career out of it;

3) anything that gets invented after you’re thirty is against the natural order of things and the beginning of the end of civilisation as we know it until it’s been around for about ten years when it gradually turns out to be alright really." --Douglas Adams

How to Stop Worrying and Love the Internet (1999)

There's a small independent jewelry store near me that has a large screen with cycling ads. They like to think they're clever, although I find a number of their ads sexist and insulting. My least favourite is "Wife Insurance".

However, today they had a new one: "We can rebuild it. Faster, stronger, cleaner. We have the techology!" accompanied by a picture of what I can only assume is a very high tech jewelry repair machine. Even I can admit that one's clever.

Hush, little kitty don't say a word,
Mama's gonna buy you a mockingbird

And if that mockingbird ain't tasty,
Mama's gonna make you a mousemeat pastry

And if that mousemeat pastry goes stale,
Mama's gonna find you a lizard's tail

And if that lizard's tail goes splat,
Mama's gonna buy you a scratching mat

And if that scratching mat won't scratch,
Mama's gonna find you a bug to catch

And if that clever bug gets away,
Mama's gonna buy you a catnip tray

And if that lovely nip gets old,
Mama's gonna buy you a fish of gold

And if that goldfish comes to any harm,
Mama's gonna buy you a ball of yarn

And if that ball of yarn winds down,
You'll still be the most spoiled little kitty in town!

Buried among organizational and procedural documents of the University of Florida Libraries, under the category of UF Course Management System Disaster Preparedness Exercises, we find Exercise #5: Zombie Attack: Disaster Preparedness Simulation.

Robin Williams on Obama Election

Any of the other librarians out there notice particularly appropriate or ironic call number assignments to certain subjects? The ones I can think of off the top of my head are (all LC because that's what I know):

Subclass BS -- The Bible
QL666 -- The biology of reptiles, including, of course, snakes.

Can anyone think of any others?

I love the first listing on the CDC's WONDER page under "Chronic Conditions". Yeah, I guess death is a rather chronic condition after all :)
gwynhefar: (Hurricane Warning)
Because, after all, this is South Louisiana, the home of jazz funerals, and the default response to practically any tragedy is to have fun with it:

From the "trivia" section of IMDB's page on Richard Belzer (guy who played Det. John Munch on a whole bunch of cop shows, most notably "Homicide: Life on the Street" and "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit"):

'He testified on behalf of a low-level criminal who ran onto the set of "Homicide: Life on the Street" (1993) while fleeing actual Baltimore police and surrendered to the actors; Belzer said the look on the guy's face was sufficient punishment'

Dude, did the guy not see the cameras? Bet he felt pretty stupid.

Also, apparently Belzer is the first cousin of Henry Winkler. And now that I know that, I can't believe I didn't notice the resemblance before. It's uncanny.

Only really funny if you are a Harry Potter fandom whore, like me. Had me giggling all morning.
