Historically, until the modern age most everyone (except the Egyptians and Herodotus, apparently) believed the traditional Homeric version with Helen in Troy. A lot of Greek myths depend on it happening that way, and it's more climactic and exciting. Of course, we don't know what the war was *really* about. Probably shipping rights..

Herodotus is a good read.
