On the kitty update note, I did try to coax them out Friday night with food. There was some progress -- one of them repeatedly came within what would have been grabbing distance if he hadn't bolted if I so much as shifted my weight -- no way I would have been fast enough. But if I stayed still he'd venture back. This was the first time any of them came that close at all, so I am encouraged.

I did not see the kittens anywhere either on my way into work today, or at my dinner break. With the weather, I'm assuming they've dug themselves a nice little hole under the hedge that is hopefully at least dry and curled up together in it. It's probably a good thing that they're not stupid enough to be out galavanting around with freezing rain falling. But tonight of all nights I wish I could somehow make them understand that coming with me would mean warmth.

You may have to trap them, if there are folks around who might harm them. Rescue organizations often loan out humane traps for a deposit. But if you do that, do it soon--the younger they are when trapped, the more likely to forgive you for the terror--and watch the trap from a distance like a hawk so that they are not in it unnoticed for any more than a minute.

If not, and if it wouldn't expose them to danger--can you put any sort of shelter out for them? A box on its side, with plastic around the cardboard if you don't have a wooden one, and with a soft towel inside?

Good luck.

They're on a college campus, and I think most people in the area would sooner help them than hurt them. I'm more worried because the area they are in is bordered by three rather busy streets -- not that they've shown any real interest in playing in the street -- they hardly ever wander away from their hedge.

They probably have better shelter under the hedge than any box I could give them, and they have each other for warmth. I may check into the trap idea -- they are perfectly willing to come eat the food I give them while I watch, as long as I make no sudden moves in their direction. They'd probably go for a trap of some sort. My only worry there is that I am unlikely to trap all three at once and once the first one is trapped the other two might be less likely to fall for it themselves.
