Like many places on campus, the hedge behind the library is prone to having stray cats give birth in it. The head of circulation is a wonderful woman who keeps a stray cat trap in her office and makes it her mission to rescue as many of these cats as possible -- and most of the grounds crew and other building workers know to go to her if they find any.

Apparently there were some new people working ground crew last week because while trimming the hedge they found a litter of 6 newborn kittens. So some enterprising person found a carboard box, dumped the kittens in it, set it by the side of the hedge and left it there. Overnight. It got cold that night, and two of the six died. The next morning was Saturday, and the library opens late. So that morning, some other enterprising soul decided that the right thing to do would be to call pest control!!! So pest control comes and takes them away to do lord knows what with.

So when the head of circulation comes in that afternoon and finds out what happened she is *furious*. She immediately calls the pest control company and browbeats them into bringing the remaining kittens back. So she's been taking care of them, and two others that someone abandoned on her vet's porch and he asked her if she would take care of them, since she was getting up with the others already. She brought them in with her so she could keep up their feeding schedule so I got to see them today. She even let me feed one. They are the *cutest* things ever, although they look more like little mice than baby cats. I'm very glad she got to them in time.

And I'd like to string the idiot grounds people up by their toes.
