Book #27 -- Theresa Tomlinson, The Moon Riders, 389 pages

This is the story of the Trojan war told not from the Greek perspective, nor from the Trojan perspective, but from the perspective of Myrina, one of a group of nomadic warrior priestesses who in Tomlinson's world are the basis for the legends of the Amazons. The entire concept is fascinating and the characters are wonderful. I've noticed that it is difficult to write a book featuring a strong female character set in a time period in which strong women were the exception without making her somewhat intimidating even to the reader. Tomlinson does a wonderful job of this. Her Amazons are not superwomen, they are human women who happen to be strong and spiritual without being figures of awe. You can identify with them. This is definitely a recommended book.

Cat update

So I have someone possibly interested in taking in Àine coming by Monday. And I've caught the other stray. He is, according the vet, male, about a year old, negative for all the nasty diseases, although positive for fleas, a little malnourished, but not too badly, and generally a pretty healthy cat, for a stray.

He is also more feral than I originally thought. He's like Siobhán, I think. They're smart, they no when it's senseless to beat themselves up against a cage door, and so we think they're more ok with our presence than they really are, which you find out very quickly first time you stick your hand in there (no I didn't get bitten or scratched, I learned my lesson with Siobhán). Jury's still out on whether or not I'll actually attempt to socialise him or just do snip and release. For now, he's got his own little cage to stay in and we'll see how he reacts after awhile. The vet said to give him a few weeks and then come and get him fixed so I'll keep him in between and if I haven't made significant progress by snipping time I might just let him go and keep feeding him outside.
