May. 6th, 2007 12:16 amBook #31 -- Stephanie Meyer, Twilight, 498 pages.
Oh wow. Vampire lovers read this one. Definitely one of the best vampire novels I've read in a long time, and particularly impressive as its teenaged heroine is both realistically teenaged, and yet not incredibly annoying. I loved it. In fact, I loved it so much, that when I finished it earlier tonight, I immediately picked up the sequel and devoured it in about 3 hours. I will add a warning to those who are for some reason against sappy romance. There's a lot of that too. So next we have,
Book #32 -- Stephanie Meyer, New Moon, 563 pages.
I was disappointed in the first half of this one. The second half more than made up for it though. I will admit that half the reason I managed to finish a book this long in 3 hours is that I skimmed over a good deal of the first half. While it was necessary for the first half to exist in order for the second half to have nearly the emotional impact it does, it is very difficult to write a first person narrative of a character in the throes of a months-long near-suicidal depression without making it rather boring. Because when you're that bad off, most of your day is concentrated on *not* throwing yourself off that cliff or in front of that car, which means you tend to try to stay away from such temptations, which leads to boring reading. Today, I woke up, and got out of bed. Maybe tomorrow I'll work on leaving the room. It was very well done in fact, but it did rather go on a little long. And then there was the requisite introduction of the annoying character who will cause problems for the romantic couple. There was a little too much time devoted to him, too. However, the second half was much better, with edge-of-the-seat (or in my case, bed) suspense, and enough sappy romance to melt me into a happily quivering pile of goo. The third book is out in August, and I already have it pre-ordered. If I'm *very* lucky, however, there will be a copy of the ARC available at ALA in June, which is where I picked up my copy of New Moon last year.
Progress toward goals: 126/365 = 34.5%
Books: 32/50 = 64%
Pages: 11227/15000 = 74.8%
