I never sleep well on Friday nights.
The psychology of insomnia -- I know that the alarm will go off at 7:30am on Saturday morning, earlier than I get up any other day. And so I go to bed worrying, will I get enough sleep . . . but the worrying keeps me awake and the numbers on the clock won't leave me alone. I do calculations in my head . . . "if I fall asleep now, I'll get 6 hours of sleep . . . 5 . . . 4 . . . 3 . . . 2 . . ." And one worry leads to another and there I am at 5am composing letters to the evil landlord in my head and making mental lists of the books I need to read or at least skim for my thesis and wondering if there will be world enough and time to finish it all.
Notes for future reference -- I must remember to order the recommended French textbook for the reading exam as soon as I get paid next week. I must call Christina and bug her about the money she owes me. I must call the landlady and see if she still wants to do the rent in advance thing. I need to make an appointment with my advisor and figure out who I'm going to ask to be my thesis director. Before that, I need to find my notes from our last meeting. I need to wrap up and send out the book I just sold.
At least I got some class reading done during the long period I was awake last night.
