Has anyone heard the new jazz-ed up theme to Law and Order: Criminal Intent? What *were* they thinking?

Moonlight

Am I the only person who just discovered CBS's "Moonlight"? Where was the advertising for this show? I *love* it. I've loved Sophia Myles since I first saw her on an episode of Doctor Who, so I was thrilled to see her get a major part in a tv series (can you say 'eye candy'?). And Jason Dohring from Veronica Mars as a 400-year-old playboy vampire? Brilliant! The main guy isn't bad either. And it's *Vampires*. And crime drama. Two things I love together. The parallels to Forever Knight are obvious, but in some ways I almost enjoy Moonlight better. Forever Knight was brilliant tv, but it had a tendency to be so dark and brooding as to be sickening. Moonlight has much more humour and a lot less guilt. Please, please, *please* let it get renewed.

Ok, Cold Case has got to be the most effective tearjerker television show on. I don't usually get all teary about a *TV* show, but damn. The way they always show the victims 'ghosts' at the end. With suitably nostalgic music. Even the one where the 'murder victim' turned out to be alive after all had me crying.

I'm such a softie.

Doctor Who

And the most anticipated (by me) episode of Doctor Who aired this weekend. Oh. My. Gods.

Nuff said.

The wonderful [livejournal.com profile] harkalark has made me several mixed CDs, and on one of them he has included a clip from an early Doctor Who (he could tell you which one, of course) that has a passage I simply cannot get over.

It has a Dalek speaking the line "Cry havoc, and let slip the dogs of war." It's really really creepy to hear that line in Dalek-voice. I keep listening to it over and over and it never looses its creepiness.

Ouch!

Damn pain. I hate pain. Pain sucks.

Sitting for six hours straight at the reference desk does *not* my back a happy camper make.

It occurred to me the other day, when I was watching reruns of House, M.D., that there are those for whom the various characters' attempts to wean House off his Vicodin actually make sense. The concerns about practicing medicine 'under the influence' and all that seem like valid concerns to these people. That is because these people are normal. They assume that when House is popping 'happy pills' by the handful he's just really good at hiding the 'happy' effects. I'm here to tell you that that isn't the case. When you've been on strong painkillers like that for a long time, they cease to be 'happy pills'.

Currently I'm on Percocet. I've been on Vicodin before. It is not unusual for me to pop a pill right before getting in the car and driving somewhere, and whereas for a normal person, that would be a monumentally stupid thing to do, for me it's just a matter of course. Because they don't affect me like that any more. Vicodin, Percocet, whathaveyou have no more affect on my ability to operate heavy machinery than ibuprofen would for a normal person. That is to say, I don't feel it at all. If I'm lucky, the pain muffles a bit. That's it.

That's rather a scary thought.

I just finally saw the last episode of House. Did anyone else notice that the number on House's, er, house, is 221. Did anyone else wonder if perhaps he lives on Baker St.?

Oh, and Donna Jensen in Erin Brockovich (the lady whose suit started the whole thing) is Catherine Willows from CSI.
gwynhefar: (tori -- never change)
Oh my. Just watched the series finale of Gilmore Girls. And, yes, I cried. But I really relate to the whole moving away from family and all. And it was such a good series. I'm going to miss it so much. And I really loved the way they recreated the final scene from the first episode. That was what really got me crying. And then I had to call my mom.

Has anyone noticed that the guy who does the "Viewer Discretion Advised" notice on House, overacts just a bit? Everyone else just says it, he has to get all Doomsday about it.
gwynhefar: (braces)
How did I not notice that Mal in Firefly wears braces too? All the cool people wear braces.

Torchwood

As of last night, I have officially watched the entire first series of Torchwood. And can I say, DAMN! that's good tv. So, I'm opening the comments up to discussion. There will be spoilers. Don't read the comments if you don't want to be spoiled. Torchwood is, by the way, my new obsession. Because Captain Jack is just that damn cool.

Randomness

Ok, so hanging out with the folks was actually really really good. It's nice to finally get to a point where your parents treat you like an equal and a friend, rather than a child. It took a very long time to get there, but I think we've made it. I had fun touring New Orleans in more depth than I had previously. Saw the Aquarium of the Americas, which was disappointing, but only because I kept comparing it to Baltimore's Aquarium, I think. Spent a lot of time wandering the little shops in the French Quarter, particularly Royal St., which has a lot of antique shops. I found a shop that was selling old coins, some of which were fitted into pendant settings, and drooled copiously over a 1600s Spanish dubloon set into a white gold setting with a skull and crossbones on it. Damn thing was $1000, but oh how I wanted it.

Had lots of beignets, and decided that I actually like the ones at Cafe Beignet on Bourbon St. better than I like the ones from Cafe Du Monde, sacrilege though it may be. Ate at a bunch of good restaurants. My stomach is slowly getting better, but I still spent much of the week queasy. Also, my back prevented a lot of the walking we might have otherwise done, so there was a decent amount of hanging around the hotel room too. But that was ok, because my parents are actually really good company when they're not being parental.

My parents left on Saturday morning, and I spent most of the weekend trying to recover from the week. My back is still very much not happy with me, but that was to be expected. I finished last season of Veronica Mars (folks weren't kidding -- it was even more shocking than the first season) and got caught up on Jericho, House, Bones, and CSI, which I had TiVo'd during the week. I also discovered that with the exception of the first episode of the season, my TiVo knockoff has screwed up all of Grey's Anatomy so far this season, so I had to set my computer to download the stuff I'd missed. I checked, but it *looked* like I had it set right, so I don't know what went wrong. I deleted the old setting and did it again and hopefully it will work properly this time. My mother, evil enabler that she is, introduced me to Las Vegas while we were in New Orleans, so now I have to add that to my Netflix list. *sigh* So much TV, so little time :)

Haven't really done any f-list reading recently, so if there's something I need to know, let me know :)

I just saw a commercial for Celebrity Duets that she's apparently on. She's all blonde and bimbo-y.

Oh, and pain level 6.

I just want to go home. Only 1 more hour. My back hurts so I took a muscle relaxer and I'm a bit fuzzy. I did my good deed for the day and got a few pages of research done, and now I just want to curl up at home and take a nap. Which probably isn't going to happen, as I really shouldn't sleep after work if I expect to get any sleep tonight.

Tired tired tired. New House tonight though, so yay! And one more episode on this disc of Veronica Mars, so I'll watch that so I can send it back to Netflix and get the next one. I have high hopes of finishing the second season before the 3rd season starts. And that reminds me that I have about 10 episodes of Gilmore Girls and the same number of episodes of Bones, and 20 episodes of Grey's Anatomy all to try and finish before their respective season premiers. Not sure if I'll be able to do it, but I'm going to put in the effort (although yes, I know Bones has already started. I have it TiVod).

Blech. Wanna go home.
gwynhefar: (House)
House MD Season premier . . .

Spoilers )
gwynhefar: (I must go down to the sea again)
I arrived back in Baton Rouge safely last night. Been keeping an eye on Ernesto, who looked ready to hit Louisiana yesterday. It became the first hurricane of the season overnight, but seems now to have shifted and they're predicting it will now hit Florida. Good news for me, bad news for all my Florida friends. Keep safe, y'all. Will still continue to keep an eye on it, as hurricanes shift quickly and it still may head back this way.

Looking forward to a day of mostly lounging around catching up on my TiVo stuff, with some unpacking, laundry, and general straightening up in between there. I really don't want to go back to work tomorrow.
gwynhefar: (Chaos Theory)
Ok, since the past few days have been bad sciatica days, and [livejournal.com profile] shadesong has been gimpy too, we've mostly been lying about around the house. This means that I have now watched all of the first season of Jeeves and Wooster (must put second season on my Netflix list) and also have two new shows to add to the TiVo schedule -- Scrubs and Eureka.

I have also played lots of Katamari. I'm getting better at it.

And I've read some books.

This has been my week.

I've loved every minute of it. Back to real life tomorrow :-(
gwynhefar: (I must go down to the sea again)
The last hour of work is always the worst. Particularly since I'm having sciatic pain. Yesterday and today have been bad for no apparent reason. My doctor has referred me to yet another specialist -- a neurologist this time -- so hopefully they'll come up with something, but I'm not holding my breath.

I'm taking tomorrow off to make up for working the weekend. I have a dentist appointment on Wednesday so I can have my horrible teeth patched up. I definitely have a cavity on a tooth that already has a filling, and I have another tooth that appears to have a crack in it, so a crown might be in order. I hate going to the dentist. It's always painful.

And just so this post has something other than whinging in it, what new shows are folks looking forward to for the Fall? Since I didn't have TV for so long, I didn't really keep up on what's coming up. Anything that looks good?
