Book #29 -- Gardner Dozois and Stanley Schmidt, eds, Roads Not Taken: Tales of Alternate History, 322 pages.

This is an absolutely fascinating book that everyone interested in sci-fi should read. Cleverly done alternate history short stories explore dozens of 'what might have been's. I think my favourite was the one in which World War II was fought as a car race.

Ok, so around midnight last night S. called me saying she had just found an abandoned kitten in her parking lot and what should she do and I would I be willing to take it. I told her I would -- after all, I'm a cat down, now and she brought it over this morning. However we discovered that it had what appeared to be a large cyst on its right foreleg, so we took it into the vet. Turns out it was an huge abcess, and despite all that we or the vet could do, the kitten died a few hours later. This was all very sad, as I'd actually been thinking about getting a kitten at some point soon anyway and had been looking forward to caring for this one.

Of course, today I had to go get snake food, which took me past the adoption center at the pet store. I decided that if I felt a connection to any of them today I'd just go with it. So guess who I found there for the first time today . . .

Remember this post? Yup, the sweet little lilac tortie was there again today. I just couldn't say no twice. Not really a kitten, but a sweetheart nonetheless. And absolutely beautiful. Technically she's a foster, as the adoption group actually lets you take them home and make sure they work out for a few weeks before you pay the adoption fee. Which is good, in case she turns out to be like Gráinne and not get along with the other kitties, but I don't think she will. I think she'll fit in just fine. She's a little bit skittish, but nothing like Róisín and I imagine it will pass soon. She'll come up to be petted, but scurries back under the bed at quick movements. Then again, it's only been a day.

I've taken to calling her Fionnuala, partly because it fits her, and partly in honour of Fionn. I'll get pictures when I can.

In other news, I've got someone at work who is considering taking in Áine. If she decides not to, there's a rescue place that takes in cats on the weekends, so I'll take her in next weekend. Siamese cats always go quick, so I'm sure she'll get a good home soon, in a household with less cats where she won't have to be so nervous.
