Looks like Ivan is moving further and further west, so wheras a few days ago it was projected to move right through Columbia, now we're on the outer edge of the possible path. Which is a pity, since I was actually somewhat looking forward to the possible cancellation of work and/or school. By the time it hit us it would have travelled over land and lost enough power that it wouldn't cause major damage and a day stuck inside with a nice cup of tea watching the ugly weather outside sounded like just what the doctor ordered. Now we'll probably still have ugly weather, but I'll have to be out working in it.
Grr.
Ok, back to reading more Emerson. This past week we've been reading Emerson and Thoreau's reactions to the Fugitive Slave Law, and I have to say that when you take away the specifics, a lot of what they're saying seems to resonate with the current political situation. The sense of absolute astonishment and betrayal -- how could my government do something so horrible; how can I bear to look others in the face as a representative of my country and not feel ashamed -- applies similarly today as it did then. I may have to do an entire entry in this vein once I'm done the reading.
