So the grandparents' visit was actually very nice. I made them try Japanese food. It was fun. I did let my grandmother buy me 3 cute new pants-that-aren't-jeans in varying levels of casualness, which was very nice. I wore the slightly bell-bottomed khakis today and got told I looked particularly nice by a friend -- score one for the self-esteem.

The insomnia has been particularly bad lately. At the moment at least, I have all my usual symptoms of depression except, well, actual depression. But the insomnia, the physical exhaustion, the total inability to concentrate on anything for more than 5 minutes, the complete lack of motivation to do pretty much *anything*, the feelings of frustration and worthlessness at my utter inability to control my body and mind -- that's all there. I figure the really "down" moods are next on the list.

At least reading the Hawthorne isn't feeling like work. I'm thoroughly enjoying The Blithedale Romance. Little Women is next on the list, which I somehow never managed to read as a child, so hopefully I'll have fun with that too. The list of classes offered next semester is out, and I need to start trying to put together a schedule. Unlike this semester, when my choices were pretty much obvious, there are *so* many classes I want to take next semester and all I have left to fill are elective spots so somehow I have to choose only 2 classes from among about 5 or 6 that sound absolutely fascinating.

I also have to set up an appointment with Dr. James and try to figure out who is going to be my thesis director and who will be my second reader. Dr. James volunteered awhile ago to be my second reader, saying she wasn't sure she had time to be my actual director. I'd love to be able to convince her to change her mind and be the director, particularly since she was the one who helped me decide on my topic and I work well with her. She is, however, the Graduate Director for the whole department, so I realise she may simply be too busy. Hopefully she will have some suggestions for who else who would be good.

The other thing I have to figure out is how to write a good cover letter. I've never had to apply for a position that required one before. Now there's a fellowship position in North Carolina I want to apply for, and I have my resume and references, but I have no idea what to say in my cover letter. I know the career center at USC has cover letter guides and examples, but I don't know when I'll get a chance to go over there. Perhaps I can try to do that tomorrow when I go in to meet with Dr. Thesing.

So, um, yeah. Lotsa stuff going on. Still haven't made any real progress on the studying for the French exam and the collecting and reading thesis material projects, and I'm running out of time on those. Too much to do, not enough time for any of it . . .

I am actually very envious of you. I'm living vicariously through your journal. I'd love to go back to school. If I did though I'd do Literature and/or Art of some kind.

Humm, maybe I'll get a copy of The Blithedale Romance...

I'm not usually a Hawthorne fan, but I'm really liking this one. You should definitely read it. I'm glad you're enjoying my grad school experience *g* I only managed to stay one year out in the real world after undergrad before becoming completely bored and running straight for grad school. I'd love nothing more than to go right from here to getting my PhD, but the student loans are piling up and I really need to pay some of it off before I can think of doing any more. If I'm lucky, I can get a job at a library in a University that allows its librarians to take free or reduced tuition classes and do a part-time PhD that way. I'm probably one of a very few people who actually consider earning a doctorate degree as something fun to do in one's spare time :)
