Hurricane Katrina

Ok folks, here's the deal.
Hurricane Katrina is a category 5 hurricane. It is currently aimed right at New Orleans. New Orleans is 50 miles east of me. The hurricane is about twice that wide. That means that yes, Baton Rouge is in the path of the edge of the hurricane. New Orleans has been evacuated. They're all coming here. The city is going crazy. They are not recommending that Baton Rouge be evacuated at this time. Right now, they're not particularly worried about wind damage in Baton Rouge. They're more worried about flooding from the torrential rains that will probably make the roads impassible and possible tornadoes spawned by the hurricane.
That means that unless a tornado heads my way, I should be safe at home. LSU is, of course, closed tomorrow, and probably will be for a few days after. I'm all stocked up with essentials and planning to ride it out. I'll keep y'all updated as long as I have power. Once the worst has passed, I will be calling
harkalark and
shadesong to let them know I'm alright. Since I probably won't have power at that point, they can comment on whatever the last post I managed to make was and let y'all know I'm ok.
This is a big deal, folks. I'm probably safe, physically, but I doubt I'll be able to leave the apartment for several days. New Orleans, on the other hand, will be a complete disaster. As it stands now, Katrina *will* overwhelm and cause serious damage to the levies. New Orleans as we know it may very well not exist after tomorrow.
Please keep everyone here in your thoughts and prayers.

Date: 2005-08-28 07:28 pm (UTC)I think BR is going to be "ok" (well, as ok as you can be with a Cat 5 slipping by you) but there will be a lot of rain and flooding. Be safe and make sure you have basics like candles and water.
