So Sunday was the new member welcome at church. I have now ensured that no one who was there that day will forget me. First they forgot to put my name in the program. So when I pointed this out quietly to the minister and the guy doing the announcements, they apologised profusely and made a point of announcing me first and apologising in front of the whole congregation for having left my name out. Lovely. Good thing I'm not as shy as I used to be.

Of course, when I got my name tag, my name was misspelled. I realise that "Gwen" is a more common name than "Gwyn". And I can see how the mistake can be easily made, particularly when I say the name. But why, oh why, when you are reading off a membership card where I very clearly printed G-W-Y-N do you feel the need to replace the "y" with an "e", when the two letters look nothing alike? Being called Gwen is a pretty big pet peeve of mine. [livejournal.com profile] adellyna is allowed to call me Gwennie because she's, well, [livejournal.com profile] adellyna. Everyone else, *please* remember the 'y'.

At least you don't have a name like mine, Chani. (ch-ah-nee) I know how irritateing it can be about spelling too. ;)

What a lovely name! I can see what you mean about spelling problems though :)

The constant misspelling problem was one of the main reasons I started going by a nickname instead of my birthname around age 13. I have one of those "bisexual" names that can be either a boy's or a girl's, and it's usually assumed to be a girl's, and it can be spelled multiple ways. So people would always misspell it in the most girly ways possible, which can really bug the crap out of a developing young guy, you know.

Hello stranger,

I was just googling around with my name and came upon your LJ. I realize that you wrote this entry more than three years ago...but nevertheless, I had to comment just to empathize--NO, people will NEVER stop calling you Gwen. It's a gene that is lacking in the majority of Americans--I still have childhood friends who don't understand/remember that my name includes a "y" and not an "e." Sometimes I try to explain it to them, and they proceed to stare at me blankly. It is the most maddening thing in the history of maddening things. If you'd like to hear your name pronounced correctly, I'd suggest going to the UK! :) They pronounce it beautifully over there.

Until then, keep your chin up and good luck with becoming a full-time Gwyn!

Best,
Gwyn[eth]
