Book #102 -- George Ella Lyon, Sonny's House of Spies, 298 pages.
Sonny's father left when he was five. Set in a small Alabama town in the 50s, this book is about Sonny's struggle to come to terms with that lack, his discovery that his father left his mother for another man, and how that knowledge affects his own relationship with his family and society.
This really was a very good book, much better than I was expecting from the description. The glbt content is pervasive and yet secondary to Sonny's relationship with the family he sees every day and the inhabitants of the town he lives in. The book is told first person from Sonny's point of view, and his is one of the best child's voices in fiction I've read for quite some time.
Progress toward goals: 252/365 = 69.0%
Books: 68%
Pages: 30151/50000 = 60.3%
