My weekend
Nov. 3rd, 2008 11:24 am![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
So I took Friday off for Samhain, did the grocery shopping, carved a pumpkin, roasted the seeds, made two pumpkin pies, and built a fire in the fireplace from scavenged wood felled by Gustav (I did the same with Katrina wood in 2005 - feels appropriate) all while listening to my now-traditional Samhain CD - Loreena McKennitt's The Visit. Did my now-traditional mini-ritual at midnight. Also spent some time reading old Due South fic to get me in the winter mood (works every time).
Spent most of Saturday lounging around and catching up on my TV watching. Also watched the movie Friends & Family, which is *hilarious*. If you haven't seen it - basically it centers around Stephen and Danny, a gay couple who work as high-ranking enforcers for the mob in New York. Stephen's parents call up and tell him they're on the way for a surprise visit, which throws the couple into chaos, because while Stephen's parents know he's gay, they think he owns a catering business. When he explains his problem to the Don he agrees to help them maintain the illusion by having his people stand in for the fictional catering business (after all, he says with stereotypical mafia exuberance - 'you two are Family!') Thus begins the preparations for a party in honour of Stephen's parents, with the Don's two effeminate sons doing the cooking and the decorating (one wants to be a chef and the other an interior designer) and the Don's security forces taking lessons from an old queen on how to act 'gay', and the Don hiring drag queens as entertainment. The whole thing is brilliantly funny and I'm half-tempted to buy it just so I can keep watching it over and over.
Sunday I went over I.'s place and got introduced to the addictiveness that is MySims Kingdom. *sigh* If only I had my own Wii.
This morning I found a roach in my shower (while I was in it, no less). Quite a rude wake-up, but it's finally getting cold around here, so I should have expected I'd be seeing some soon as they try to find warmer places to live. Bugs in the South suck.

"Also spent some time reading old Due South fic to get me in the winter mood (works every time)."
I suppose I should have realized such a thing existed...Heck, if I'd known about fanfic back when that show was on, I probably would've written some...anyway...

Date: 2008-11-03 07:04 pm (UTC)Due South fic has a tendency to give me a warm fuzzy feeling and a longing for the winters of my youth.

Date: 2008-11-03 10:42 pm (UTC)Gosh. Now you put me on the spot and I realize I have absolutely no sensible reason for what I said...Maybe you should just assume I failed to make a joke. (I do that a lot) : )

Date: 2008-11-04 12:22 am (UTC)I have to admit that I am frequently a reader of fics where my reaction is 'ok, no way in *hell* those two (or three or four) are getting it on, but hey, that was still a fun read' [Witness the many Fraser/Ray V. fics, which I do not get at all]. I think what I like about Fraser/Ray K. is that I *do* think it could work.
First of all, a deep emotional connection between the two *is* canon. And there are plenty of hints in the series that that bond may not be entirely platonic, whether it was ever acted on or not. Forget the whole 'Do you find me attractive' scene (which I agree with you is hysterical) - you just need look at Bob Fraser's 'A partnership is like a marriage' speech. It doesn't get much more obvious than that.
Assuming they every manage to get past their individual insecurities to actually begin a romantic relationship, it's one that I honestly think would last. They have all the qualities needed for a successful marriage - a genuine understanding of and respect for the other (something I don't think Fraser and Ray V. ever had, despite their fondness for each other), loyalty, affection, complementary strengths, etc.
And, then of course, there's the one thing that eliminates tons of popular slash pairings from being realistic - the characters need to be people who would conceivably consider a same-sex relationship. In many cases, authors who do write slash fandom end up writing characters who bear only slight resemblance to the canon. But Fraser and Ray K. are two that I think really would be ok with it -- Fraser in a 'people are people no matter the shape' kind of way and Ray K. in a 'hey, I'll try anything once' kind of way.
And then of course there's the ending of the show -- they practically ride off into the sunset (ok, the icefields) together . . . the implication being that their 'partnership' however you wish to define it, is a lifelong thing.
Personally I find it not only believable, but likely, that given enforced close quarters and general isolation from the outside world inherent in their Quest, eventually one or the other is going to break and feelings will be admitted and then they can both settle down happily in the Northwest Areas [snark] somewhere where such things are more generally accepted and live happily ever after. Because I'm a romantic at heart.
Sorry, didn't mean for this to be a treatise *g*. It's just that Fraser and Ray K. are probably my favourite pairing, slash or traditional, in any fandom, so I can tend to wax poetic about it :)
