Buried among organizational and procedural documents of the University of Florida Libraries, under the category of UF Course Management System Disaster Preparedness Exercises, we find Exercise #5: Zombie Attack: Disaster Preparedness Simulation.

My Review )

Apparently, if you were enrolled in the University of Alabama at a certain point in the early 90s and taking philosophy classes, your syllabus may have included the following disclaimer: "Caution: Please do not pay any attention to the wolf. He will not hurt you. However, if you do have any food in your bags, please make sure that those bags are securely fastened shut."

Oh what I wouldn't give to have attended those classes!

I'm currently reading a book for work on the use of social software (blogs, podcasts, etc) in classrooms, both high school and college. Some people are excited about the possibilities, and report positive results, while others feel that social software is just a fad that holds no place in serious education.

So, what do you think? Anyone have any experiences with using this stuff in the classroom? Let the discussion begin!

Those (few) of you who read or even occasionally peruse the Chroncle of Higher Education may be familiar with "Ms. Mentor", the "Dear Abby" of the Ivory Tower. I've read several of her columns, and she always has amusing advice about negotiating campus politics and dealing with troublesome students. I never much paid attention to the "About the Author" section of her column until she took a sentence to thank those who had sent her messages inquiring about her health after Katrina and Rita. Must be from Louisiana, I thought, considering we're the only state that got hit by both hurricanes. So I checked -- turns out she's a professor in the English Department right here at LSU. Which means she's probably here in the library on a regular basis. I may even have helped her at the reference desk. Our own little mini-celebrity.
